A failed rooftop AC can turn a Florida stopover, a desert campground, or a long drive home into a miserable day fast. An RV rooftop air conditioner replacement is not just a matter of choosing the biggest unit available. The new air conditioner has to fit the roof opening, match the RV’s electrical capacity, work with the right ceiling assembly, and provide enough cooling for how you actually travel.

For many RV owners, replacing the complete upper unit is the more dependable choice when an older system has a failed compressor, recurring refrigerant problems, severe corrosion, or unavailable parts. A new unit can also be a practical upgrade if your current AC struggles to keep up, especially in a larger fifth wheel, toy hauler, or motorhome.

Start by Confirming the Air Conditioner Is the Problem

Before ordering a replacement, rule out the simpler causes of poor cooling. A dirty return-air filter, blocked condenser coil, weak campground power supply, tripped breaker, faulty thermostat, or failed start capacitor can mimic a bad air conditioner. If the fan runs but the air never gets cool, or the compressor starts and quickly shuts down, diagnosis is worthwhile before replacing expensive equipment.

That said, replacement is usually the sensible route when the compressor is locked up, the sealed refrigerant system is leaking, or the unit is old enough that repair parts and labor approach the price of a new rooftop AC. Rooftop RV units are exposed to sun, vibration, rain, tree debris, and road miles. Even a well-maintained unit eventually reaches the point where a replacement offers better value than another repair.

RV Rooftop Air Conditioner Replacement: Get the Fit Right

Most standard rooftop RV air conditioners install through a nominal 14-inch by 14-inch roof opening. Do not assume every opening, interior assembly, or mounting system is interchangeable, though. Measure the opening from inside the RV after removing the ceiling grille or assembly, and confirm the roof thickness required by the new unit.

The roof opening is only one part of compatibility. Check whether your RV has a ducted or non-ducted air distribution system. A ducted system sends conditioned air through ceiling ducts to multiple vents, while a non-ducted system blows directly from a ceiling assembly below the rooftop unit. Many AC models can be configured for either setup, but they require the correct matching interior components.

It is also smart to measure available rooftop clearance. Standard-height units are common and can be cost-effective, but a low-profile model may be the better option for owners concerned about overall RV height, storage clearance, or wind resistance. Make sure the replacement will clear solar panels, roof vents, satellite equipment, and nearby accessories.

Do Not Mix Components Without Verifying Compatibility

The rooftop unit, ceiling assembly, thermostat, control box, and communication harness may be designed to operate as a system. This is particularly true for multi-zone installations and digital thermostat setups. Reusing an old interior assembly can save money when it is specifically approved for the new model, but guessing can create wiring, control, and airflow problems.

Manufacturer model numbers matter here. Coleman-Mach, Dometic, Advent, Furrion, and other major brands offer different configurations across product generations. Compare the exact model number of the existing upper unit and interior assembly, then review the new system’s installation requirements before buying. If the RV has two or three air conditioners, identify whether the units share a thermostat or zone controller.

Choose Capacity Based on RV Size and Travel Conditions

A 13,500 BTU rooftop air conditioner remains a common replacement size for smaller trailers, campers, and moderate climates. A 15,000 BTU unit is often the better fit for larger RVs, units with lots of glass, dark exterior finishes, limited shade, or frequent summer travel in the South and Southwest.

More BTUs are not automatically better. A larger unit may draw more power, cost more, and still fail to cool well if the RV has poor insulation, leaking window seals, restricted ducts, or an undersized electrical supply. On the other hand, replacing a struggling 13,500 BTU unit with another identical model may not solve the problem in a 35-foot RV that sees full sun in July.

Consider how you camp. Weekend campers in milder regions may be well served by the same capacity they had from the factory. Full-time RVers and families traveling in sustained heat may benefit from a 15,000 BTU model, a second rooftop AC, or improved airflow and insulation measures. In a large coach, two properly sized units generally cool more evenly than expecting one oversized unit to handle the entire interior.

Heat Pump or Straight Cool?

A heat pump rooftop AC can provide efficient electric heat during cool, but not freezing, weather. It is useful for taking the chill off in spring and fall without running the RV furnace. However, it does not replace a propane furnace in genuinely cold conditions. Heat pump output drops as outdoor temperatures fall, and the furnace remains the more reliable source of heat for winter camping.

A straight-cool air conditioner may be the better value if you primarily need summer cooling or already rely on the furnace for heat. The right choice depends on where and when you use the RV, not simply on which feature list is longer.

Check Electrical Requirements Before You Order

Most rooftop RV air conditioners operate on 115-volt AC shore power or generator power. The key question is whether your RV’s service can handle the unit under real conditions. A 30-amp RV can run one rooftop AC, but it may not have room for the microwave, electric water heater, hair dryer, and other high-draw appliances at the same time. A 50-amp RV offers more flexibility, especially with two AC units.

Starting current is another consideration. Older generators and smaller portable generators may struggle to start an air conditioner even when they can handle its running load. A compatible soft start device can reduce startup demand and may help an AC run on a smaller generator or limited shore connection. Verify that the device is approved for the specific air conditioner and installed correctly.

If your old unit used a particular control board, thermostat wiring arrangement, or 12-volt control circuit, do not assume the replacement will connect exactly the same way. Read the electrical specifications and installation instructions for the complete system. This small step prevents many of the most frustrating replacement mistakes.

Plan the Installation Before the Box Arrives

A rooftop air conditioner is awkward and heavy enough that this is not a one-person roof job. Arrange for at least one helper, use a safe lifting method, and avoid walking on areas of the roof that cannot support your weight. Disconnect shore power, switch off the generator, and disconnect battery power when required by the installation instructions before opening electrical compartments.

Once the old unit is removed, inspect the roof opening closely. Look for soft decking, water stains, damaged framing, cracked sealant, or deteriorated wiring. A new AC gasket cannot correct a rotten roof structure. Repair roof damage first, then install the new unit on a clean, flat mounting surface.

The rooftop unit is normally secured by bolts from the interior ceiling assembly. Tighten them evenly to the manufacturer’s specified compression range. Over-tightening can crush the foam gasket and create leaks; under-tightening can leave gaps that allow water intrusion. Do not add caulk around a gasketed rooftop unit unless the manufacturer specifically calls for it. The gasket is designed to seal through proper compression.

Before reinstalling trim, test every function: fan speeds, compressor cooling, thermostat response, duct airflow, heat-pump mode if equipped, and condensate drainage. Let the system run long enough to confirm that the compressor cycles normally and that breakers remain stable.

Buy for the Whole System, Not Just the Roof Unit

The lowest-priced upper unit is not always the lowest-cost replacement once you add a required ceiling assembly, thermostat, control kit, or adapter. Build the complete parts list first. It should include the rooftop AC, compatible interior assembly, any required control box or thermostat, and a new mounting gasket if it is not included with the unit.
